Tampere lies on an isthmus between two lakes, on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids. A city of green parks and clean water, it has little industrial pollution. Once a center of heavy industry, and textile and paper manufacturing, Tampere is now a hub of the IT industries. The largest inland city in Scandinavia, Tampere offers many cultural attractions, theater, film and music festivals as well as museums, an aquarium, a dolphinarium and a planetarium.

Unique in Finland are UTA’s programs in American studies, environmental policy, journalism and mass communication, Russian language, Russian studies and social sciences. The large number and variety of Russian language courses together with the Russian Studies program form an extensive and versatile study module for those who have a special interest in Russian language and culture.
