Lyon is a major industrial center in the southeast of France only two hours by train from Paris. The Saone and Rhone rivers both run through the city. Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (INSA) was founded in 1957 to train highly qualified engineers, support continuing education, and conduct research and testing.

INSA focuses on engineering and technology with a research emphasis for students as well as faculty. Degree programs include computer science (systems analysis and software engineering); biochemistry; energy engineering (thermal systems, chemical engineering, environmental industrial problems); electrical, mechanical and civil engineering; city planning; materials physics; and telecommunications.
